The Village Project

The ultimate goal of Fig Tree and Vine is to create a fully functional and self-sustaining village for the Acholi people. This will require generous donations and a series of projects to accomplish the full village construction.

The Acholi people have endured incredible struggles over past several decades and barely subsist in their current setting in the Banda Acholi refugee camp in Kampala. This camp is scheduled for demolition by the government to make room for new housing projects and will once again leave these people without shelter. Filda and several other staff members and contacts in Uganda have been mentoring and caring for about 3000 individuals in the Banda Acholi slums over the past several years. We dream of helping these Acholi refugees by relocating them back to their homeland and giving them a new, fully functional and self-sustaining village they can be proud to call their own.

Our organization has purchased 100 acres of fertile land in the Omoro district near Gulu in the northern Acholiland that is ready for village construction. We plan to raise crops and livestock for food and for revenue to help sustain the village residents. We aim to build a new private primary and secondary school, medical clinic, community center, non-denominational church, and housing for the students, teachers, and families. We plan to educate the children in the village and the neighboring properties through sponsorship donations. New water wells will provide clean water to the village and the surrounding neighborhoods. Eventually, we hope to purchase the additional 250 acres of adjacent land to expand our farming and livestock production to make the village truly self-sustaining. All of these efforts hope to promote the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of these individuals who have lacked the basic necessities of health, security, and shelter.

Below is the list of projects required to create this self-sustaining village. These are presented mostly in order of priority as funding allows. We will keep this page updated as progress is achieved.
